Laundry Time…

20 Feb

To save money for our adoption (and for our one-income budget), one thing I do is make our laundry detergent.  I use soap nuts…Soap nuts are the only laundry soap that grows on trees. It is 100% safe and natural for the most sensitive skin. Soap nuts are the dried fruit of the Chinese Soapberry tree. They contain saponin, a natural cleaner. They are simply harvested, de-seeded, and then dried in the sun. Great for hard water and high efficiency machines. It is biodegradable, hypo-allergenic, brightens colors, low sudsing, and contains a natural fabric softener.  We like soap nuts detergent because it has no borax in it either (like most of the homemade laundry detergents do).

The How-to:

1. Place 12-15 raw soap nuts in a pot with 6 ½ cups of pure filtered or distilled water. Make sure you cover with a lid.
2. Bring to a boil and then turn to a simmer for 1 hour. (I recommend checking it pretty often to make sure it is not boiling over that first time you make it.)
3. Allow the mixture to cool completely.
4. Strain the nuts from the liquid or just do like I do and remove the nuts with a spoon.

If you make a large batch as described you will want to refrigerate it between uses to preserve it. It is recommended to use within 3-4 days.  We do not use it all up within 3-4 days so we freeze it in ice cube trays.  Each cube equals 1/4 cup which is the recommended amount for regular laundry loads.  Then we just put the detergent cubes in a freezer bag and remove what we need to heat up for a minute on the microwave when doing a load of laundry.  (By the way, you still need to stain treat clothes with whatever you use for stain treatment before you wash a load of laundry.  At least, I do with a very messy little boy!)

I have added a link to the company that sells the soap nuts we use (go to our blog site and look on the right hand side for the link).  If you purchase soap nuts (they do sell sample sizes, too) or skin care products, etc. through Naturoli’s link, we do receive a little money back for our adoption expenses.

I’ve got to go make some detergent now.  Always lots of laundry to do! IMG_3529_cropped Just wanted to share one way we save money for our adoption expenses or for occasional treats (like ice cream on Colin’s Gotcha Day) by making our own non-toxic detergent which doesn’t hurt our sensitive skin 🙂

Thanks for stopping by,
