Homestudy and Adoption Update

28 Jan

Our Adoption News pink footprints

We haven’t talked here much lately about our next adoption but are ready to share that we are still working on our homestudy.  We are adopting from the U.S. this time.  We are requested 1 or 2 children 0 to 2 years old in age.  We are requesting that one of them (or both) be a little girl because we feel that Colin would benefit from having a little sister.  Since we aren’t sure if we will adopt again after this adoption, we also wanted to have a daughter.  We aren’t sure if we will be matched with a newborn, a 6 month old, twins or siblings, or a toddler…There are many unknowns that just can’t be predicted.  We don’t know which state our child or children may live in or if she/he/they are even born yet.  We don’t know for sure how much our adoption expenses will be because it depends on which agency matches us with a child or children and helps to facilitate the adoption…and it depends on whether we adopt 1 or 2 children and their ages…Lots of variables…

We signed with Christian Adoption Consultants who will give us guidance throughout the adoption process. They network with numerous well-respected adoption agencies to which we will apply, and they have provided information on which states are the most adoption friendly for families. The agencies they network with waive the up-front application fees for clients of Christian Adoption Consultants.

As we prayerfully decide if we wanted to be presented a possible parent of a child who has already been born or is shortly to be born(or in some cases whether we may be deciding if we want to be considered as possible parents for a child whose parents’ rights have been terminated), our consultant will be there to offer us advice and to pray along side us.  Our consultant, Tracie, has adopted internationally as well as from the U.S. so she offers unique perspective on how the processes differ and is helping to educate us about what to expect as we embark on this new journey to become parents.  She is very accessible and easy to talk to which makes entering a totally different adoption process more comfortable for us.

Adoption Expenses

We hope to receive the remainder of our adoption tax credit from Colin’s adoption back to use towards this adoption.  We also have some savings and donations from a few families to put towards adoption expenses. We now lack about $15,940-$33,640 for the estimated expenses of adopting our child (or children!).  It is very difficult to project the expenses but this gives you an idea of how much it may cost us to complete the adoption of our daughter.

Time Line

Before we apply to agencies and are considered as possible parents for these children (or children yet to be born), we must finalize our homestudy and complete our profile (think family scrapbook with descriptions of our family, etc.).  We have our final visit scheduled for our homestudy February 10th.  We are finishing up any remaining paperwork for the homestudy.  We are also simultaneously working on the narrative portion of our profile.

We could be looking at being matched with a child(ren) a month or 12 months after our homestudy is finalized.  Even more so than in our Russian adoption, the timeline is unpredictable and could move at the speed of lightning–which makes the fundraising and saving for this current adoption more urgent, though the overall expenses may be less.  We know of children who either currently need homes or will in the near future.  While we don’t know if we will be matched with one(or two) of these children any time soon, we have to be prepared for that possibility before we allow ourselves to be considered a possible parents.  SO with this adoption we are taking a different sort of leap of faith…this leap of faith is into the unknown of whether we will need financial help soon after we complete our homestudy and profile or several months down the line…

The possibility of being matched with a child (or children) so soon after we finish our homestudy and profile is both exciting and terrifying for me!  We know from Colin’s adoption that God is more than able to provide what we lack financially for our adoption expenses.  I have to keep reminding myself that the immediacy of the need for the money we lack is not going to deter God; our role is to step out in faith and trust that God will help us to complete the adoption(or adoptions) He has planned for us. On a daily basis, we try to live a frugal lifestyle to help save some for our adoption, but the bottom line is that we are trusting God to provide for this adoption and we are thanking Him in advance for how He is going to be glorified through the adoption.

Thanks for stopping by,

Heather

We are excited for you & we thank you for sharing the details of the next adoption process. It helps us as we try to navigate another adoption – this time domestic. It appears that you will be going thru a private agency. Did you research going thru your county? Just wondering because we cannot afford another $30,000 to adopt (andrey’s turned out to be about $50,000 & we’re wondering if the county would be good because i hear it’s practically free. Can you e-mail me again…can’t find your e-mail address! thanks, Jeanette…we got your thank you card…your pic is beautiful! Your smile is especially lovely !
