Ways to Pastor Adoptive Parents and Pre-Adoptive Parents…

5 Mar

This link is for an awesome article on how pastors (and their congregations) can support adoptive parents and those who are considering adoption.  I think that a significant disappointment in our adoption journey was that our small church’s pastor seemed ignorant of our adoption throughout the process, and he didn’t really seem to know how to support us nor did he express a desire to know how to support us.  I am sharing this not to whine about our personal experiences but to let others know that they are not alone if they have had a similar experience.

It is worth mentioning that we were very blessed to have a supportive pastor at my parents’ church in my hometown.  He encouraged us primarily through prayer.  He strengthened our faith as he led his congregation in actively praying that our son would be home by Christmas (and Colin was!)  He was genuinely excited about our son and about our call as Christians to adopt.  He lived about 6 hours from us yet we believe that God used Bro. Artie to minister to us and our family during our adoption journey.

From talking other adoptive families, I have learned that the majority of families have had very supportive pastors in their churches. I am hoping and praying that most adoptive families have not had an experience similar to ours in their home churches since I believe Scripture says that churches are called to seek out ways to care for the orphans and widows of the world.

Check out this excellent article by Jason Kovacs of the ABBA Fund to learn more about supporting adoptive families:
