Faith is the Victory…

8 Sep

This weekend we watched the movie, The Inn of Sixth Happiness, about Gladys Alyward, a missionary to China.  There were many inaccuracies in this movie but it was still interesting because it caused me to read more about Gladys.  I remember vaguely reading about her when I was growing up but I didn’t remember how mightily she was used by God.  She faced many impossible situations but God was faithful to provide for her.  She seems to have been quite a bold little woman (less than 5 feet tall, I think)!

A Streams in the Desert devotion this week spoke of the Bible story of the walls of Jericho coming down.  Before the wall even came down, God said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men.” (Joshua 6:2, NIV)  The devotional points out that God didn’t talk in the future tense; he talked like it was already a done deal!  And God already knew the victory was theirs.  To the Israelites, the circumstances seemed impossible.  But we know with God all things are possible!  He already knew how He was going to have them walk around the walls of Jericho for seven days and on the seventh day give a ‘loud shout,’ right before the walls came tumbling down.

The devotional says, “The ‘loud shout’ of steadfast faith is the exact opposite of the groans of wavering faith and the complaints of discouraged hearts. (Ouch…I am guilty of complaining and need to daily strive for more steadfast faith!)  Of all the ‘secret(s) of the Lord’ (Psalm 25:14), I do not believe there are any more valuable than the secret of this ‘loud shout’ of faith.”

The devotional goes on to say: “No one would normally believe that a shout could cause city walls to fall.  Yet the secret of their victory lay precisely in just that shout, for it was the shout of faith.  And it was a faith that dared to claim a promised victory solely on the basis of the authority of God’s Word, even though there were no physical signs of fulfillment.  God answered His promise in response to their faith, for when they shouted, He caused the walls to fall.”

My theme this month or focus is the “loud shout” of faith; I want to demonstrate steadfast faith that God has already given us the victory over the obstacles between us and our son.  Thank you, Father God, for blessing us with Colin.  Help us to keep steadfast faith as we wait for our return to Russia.

Thanks for stopping by,
